This is a familiar passage for most of us: “Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth.” “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” This is the familiar message of verses 19-21, and no doubt you have heard, read and possibly written pieces on these verses. The next part, verses 22-23 aren’t quoted so often:
The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
This is an interesting thing to say right in the middle of a passage about money, so let’s keep in mind that “light” “darkness” and “eye” are metaphors. If our treasure is contained in a bank vault, there is where our hearts will be, in a dark and dusty vault. If that is where our heart is and where are eyes are focused, then the only thing we will see is darkness, and darkness is used in the gospels as a metaphor for being outside of the presence of God, while light is used as a metaphor for being in his presence. Thus, what Jesus seems to be getting at here is that if our attention in this life is on money and money matters, it cannot be on following Him, for we have cut ourselves off from His presence. The issue is not whether money is good or bad, but that it is a distraction from God. If we focus merely on money, then our hearts will not be in the right place, and when you come right down to cases, money isn’t really the issue either, for the real issue is the things of this world as opposed to the things of God.
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
In truth, a follower of Jesus Christ simply cannot live for money, cannot give their complete focus and attention to earning a living, for if they do, their attention and focus will not be on their relationship with God. The next section will make this point even more clear… see you tomorrow morning!
